New Photos by Anthony Valanis
The existing kitchen featured a large island that wrapped around the entire kitchen with a small center prep island. The cooking and refrigeration were located on the two perimeter walls. The homeowners “had enjoyed this space, which was original to the home they built 18 years earlier, but were ready for some changes.” In the new kitchen design two islands were positioned parallel to eachother and the cooking wall. This elongates the space and leads your eye to the family room.
The eating nook remained relatively the same, reusing the existing window valance. A new table and dining chairs, customized with a silk emboidered fabric back panel, combine nicely with an existing sofa to create a relaxed feel.
The double sided center island is full of a variety of features. These include a prep sink, knife and utensil inserts in the drawers, a pop-up mixer shelf, microwave drawer, and a warming drawer concealed behind a custom panel. A soapstone countertop is inset into the granite top which is great for baking. The end of the island features an end-grain walnut butcher block top on a walnut pedestal adding contrast to the neutrality of the cabinetry.
The new cooking wall features two ovens, both positioned under the countertop so as not to be obtrusive. A large custom faux-painted plaster hood is the focal point of the wall. Two spice pullout cabinets flank both sides of the cooktop.
The outer island includes a large sink for cleanup, two trash pullout cabinets, and two dishwashers. A custom open cavity for paper towel rolls makes clean-up easy. Seating is also available at the back side of the island.
An existing butler’s pantry was transformed to add additional storage and ambiance. One wall contains a sink and storage for barware, while the other has multiple refrigerator drawers and deep cabinets with pullout shelves for pantry storage. A unique multiple drawer cabinet creates a focal wall with space for a featured work of art above. Unique lighting and a customized antique mirror accentuate the space.
The attached family room creates a space to relax around the fire or watch television. An existing alcove was used to creat a built-in seating area with a custom table. The bench features a cushion, pillows, and padded fabric panels to soften the space. The furniture is a mixture of new pieces and existing ones from the homeowners collection.
The clean lines of the new kitchen and family room create a feel of timeless elegance. Cream painted Downsview cabinets with a subtle gray glaze allow for a neutral backdrop to pops of accent colors. The gray of the butler’s pantry cabinets pull from the gray glaze in the kitchen and create a dramtic backdrop.
The layering of the finished materials create a comfortable feel in this space. From the countertops and backsplash tile to the lighting, hardware, and fabrics – there is beauty in the details.
Says the homeowners, “The results, by any standard are stunning. The space has increased, though it is the same. The design is unique, clean, beautiful, modern and timeless; the cabinet work exquisite. Kristin, Lisa and their staff were professional in every way and most pleasant. All commitments were met as agreed. The experience was fun and the results beyond satisfying.”
Mother-Daughter Fun
Thank you to all of the Mothers and Daughters who came to the cooking class last week in celebration of Mother’s Day! Hosted by Chef Jennifer Verkamp in the KBD Showroom, mothers and daughters enjoyed a French Brunch. They learned how to prepare Blueberry Cinnamon French Toast Casserole, La Croque Madame, and a French Fruit Salad with Lemon Honey Dressing.

When hired to remodel this kitchen I was given a blank slate. The client’s requirements included: 1. A functional kitchen with a concise work triangle, ample counter space and storage. 2. Creation of entertainment space apart from the main body of the work triangle. 3. A color palette that would feel natural, versatile and timeless, incorporating earthy colors and clean lines to serve as a backdrop for the client’s very eclectic museum quality art collection.I manipulated the existing wall spaces and entrances into the kitchen, angling the back wall to pull the kitchen out of the corner and make a more dynamic presentation for the main focal cooking wall. This design change allowed for dual islands, setting up the kitchen to work in a very circular fashion with all the functionality required from each zone.
There is ample storage and countertop space in each work zone. For instance, within the cooking zone we have allowed for large pot and pan drawers, spices, knife and utensil inserts and a secondary sink for prep work. The design elements, like the focal location of the cooking zone, mixed with natural feeling materials create high contrast and a backdrop architectural in nature.
This kitchen is an example of a clean, uncluttered, contemporary, functional space that will stand the test of time. The color palette speaks to earth, fire and water, combining hot and cold elements that create great contrast and visual impact.
The element I love most about this kitchen is the new angled orientation of the entire space within the home. I feel this major design change gave the heart of this home a whole new edgy/artistic vibe sought after by my client. The kitchen now has not only highly functional work zones, but feels focal to the home.
The homeowners thoughts about their new kitchen:
“We just love our new kitchen. My husband and I had definite ideas about the look we wanted and the new appliances, but we were stuck on the design. Our kitchen and great room are in one large, open room. KBD did an amazing job at integrating the space. The design is ideal. We cook and entertain a lot, so having both a prep island and an entertainment island is a perfect fit for us. The entertainment island with its two kinds of granite is gorgeous and functional with both a wine cooler and wine rack.”
“The prep island is my favorite. It has a sink for washing vegetables and two refrigerated drawers where I keep all my fresh produce. It has a cutting board top. The island is close to my gas cooktop and refrigerator. We wanted the kitchen to have good flow, clean lines and ample storage with little clutter. We wanted a contemporary look, but not a cold or sterile feel. The kitchen is where we spend most of our time and it is our favorite room in the house.”
